Ok, I know my first hesitation with the mass email list was having to friend a ton of people I didn't know. I'm not so keen on letting the world see what I did for my birthday or my son's football games. LOL So with the help of facebook this is what I came up with.
I have a separate group in the friends settings just for sorority life (soro life) for short. Each person I friend I put into that group. In the privacy settings of facebook you can determine how much information is seen.
By doing this you don't have to spend time un-friending people and honestly I've found my sisters to have very funny and interesting information that comes over the feed.
How to set this up-
-Put your cursor over Friends on the blue Facebook Tab, then click all friends
-Click on the create new list button
-Put in your name of your new list
-Next all of your friends will appear. Click on the people you want in this list. (you will see a blue check in a box when they are selected)
-Once you are finished selecting everyone, scroll down and click the create list button" and you are done.
-When you accept new request, under the new sisters name you will see the "add to list" button with a drop down or when you send a request you can put themin the group at that time as well with the drop down
-Click the drop down and the name of your list will appear
-Select the name and then hit the confirm button. That person will be added to the list automatically.
-Now that the list is created
-Put your cursor on settings on the facebook toolbar and wait for the drop down
-Select the privacy settings option (please note this is how I have my settings done, please chose the options that best fit your needs).
-Click on Profile
-I've made every option on this page set up for "only friends"
-Once you have chosen your options click on "edit custom settings" under each option except "profile"
-Go to the field for "except these people" and type in the name of your list. then hit ok.
-A red symbol will appear letting you know that everyone in this group can not view this information. (please note you have to do this for every option on the profile page)
After this you are done.
Now if you want to check to see if it's working
-On this same page near the top you will see this option- "See how a friend sees your profile:"
-Enter a random name of a friend in the list you just created and hit enter
-The system will generate a copy of the version of your profile that is open to this person. If you've missed something just go back and check all your options.
*******Eeveryone will still be able to see your profile pictures but not your picture album*********

Thanks so much for this...
ReplyDeleteI had done some of it (create the group and limit some access) but did not know how to test.
The one thing that would be great would be if one could also limit how much of the activity for the group comes to your feed. Do you happen to know how that is done.
The other question it would appear that you cannot limit what someone see from your wall. Do you happen to know if that is something that can also be blocked or limited?
I did this to my facebook: my photos, selected personal info and other stuff that I do not want much to share to the whole world are limited to my relatives and close friends only.
ReplyDeleteThen when adding a new friend, i just need to include that to my "Sorority" group, so the privacy settings will take place.
There is an exception in this, all of your profile photos (including the folder) will be seen. You cannot set the exception. So make sure to put only few or one photo.
@Genevieve: do the last three instructions given.
don't forget to add me dhy_yhd@yahoo.com! ^_^
You can also chat with me if you need an online live help in regard to this. :)
Yes you can limit info from friends on the wall, i have to research it again, it use to be easy but with the constant changes to facebook things get lost. I'll get back to you.

I think it is here:
ReplyDelete1) Click on Settings >Privacy > Profile > Wall Posts
2) On the drop down list, click Customize
3) Select if you want "Friends of Friends" or "Only Friends"
4) Then on the "Except These People" area, type in the name of the people or the group (mine is named "Sorority").
5) Click Okay and you're set!
Hope that helps everybody! :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INFO. IT MADE MY FB LIFE A LITTLE MORE MANAGEABLE.
